The Merchant of Venice

Our year of Shakespeare included a study on The Merchant of Venice and the concept of Mercy. The students covered many themes and complexities including the treatment of Shylock. We mixed original text with modern day scenarios and the Venice News at 10 was a particular hit.
Young people ‘get’ Shakespeare.

Scotland : The Promised Land ep 3 The Cultural Revolution

Honoured to contribute to this wonderful episode on Scotland’s Cultural Revolution in the years following the First World War. Discussing the pressures on aspirational Scots to lose their accent for an RP delivery.

Mother’s Day Sonnets

Learning about the sonnet today and our talented players learned half of this beautiful Christina Rossetti sonnet for Mother’s Day :
Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome

By Christina Rossetti, 1830 – 1894
Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome

Has many sonnets: so here now shall be

One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me

To her whose heart is my heart’s quiet home,

To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee

I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome;

Whose service is my special dignity,

And she my loadstar while I go and come

And so because you love me, and because

I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath

Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honored name:

In you not fourscore years can dim the flame

Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws

Of time and change and mortal life and death.
